The recommended exposure limit for occupational noise needs to be revised downwards

چکیده
Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is caused by cumulative occupational and non-occupational noise exposure. The National Institute for Occupational Safety Health (NIOSH) developed exposure recommendations (85 dBA 8-hour time-weighted average) in 1972. Fifty years later, the NIOSH recommended limit (REL) needs to be revised downwards. In its calculations, assumed that workers have quiet when not at work, something no longer true. Non-occupational begins childhood continues during work into retirement. Multiple studies document daily exposures near 75 dB or dBA, exceeding Environmental Protection Agency's calculated level prevent loss, a average of 70 24 hours (Leq(24)). calculations were based on material measured limited frequency pure tone audiometry, an insensitive measure noise-induced auditory damage. Use more sensitive measures damage would show NIHL after shorter times. Downward revision REL will protect workers, may lead greater public awareness dangers noise, guidance reduced exposure, regulations lower ambient levels. A quieter world better healthier all.

Hearing impairment due to cigarette smoking and simultaneous exposure to occupational noise
Abstract Background : Noise is the most common hazard in the workplace and noise induced hearing loss considered to be the most common occupational disease as well. Cigarette smoking, in some studies, has been known to induce hearing loss. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of contemporary exposure to occupational noise and cigarette smoking on hearing. Methods :...
متن کاملOccupational Exposure to Bisphenol A (BPA): A Reality That Still Needs to Be Unveiled
Bisphenol A (BPA), 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, is one of the most utilized industrial chemicals worldwide, with the ability to interfere with/or mimic estrogenic hormones with associated biological responses. Environmental human exposure to this endocrine disruptor, mostly through oral intake, is considered a generalized phenomenon, particularly in developed countries. However, in the con...

متن کاملOccupational exposure to noise pollution in anesthesiology.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The harmful effects of workplace noise pollution are well known and described in the literature. The effects of prolonged exposure to noise in areas demanding high level of concentration, such as operating rooms, depend on the variability of individual responses and intensity of different generation sources. The aim of this paper is to present a review of occupational ...
